Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is looking for a talent with a strong background in public communications – media relations and social media management – and a desire to further the organisation’s aims to fill the following position based in Kuala Lumpur:

Communications Officer (Malaysia)
Reporting to the Communications Manager (Southeast Asia), the Communications Officer is responsible in planning and implementing the institutional communications activities in Malaysia to raise visibility, awareness and acceptance of MSF in the country by promoting the profile and identity of the organisation as well as its worldwide activities and humanitarian concerns via media, social media, and public events for segmented target markets as well as the general public. 
The major responsibilities of this position are:
  • Manage media relations for regular and quality coverage of MSF’s global work and worldwide humanitarian crises

  • Manage MSF HK social media accounts for Malaysia and regularly scan the social media landscape to keep MSF up to date with new and effective tools/platforms

  • In coordination with the OCA mission, plan and organise public events and/or other visibility activities of MSF in the country with support from events team in HK

  • Act as the primary link coordinating the presentation of MSF in Malaysian media in Bahasa, Chinese and English.

  • Network with active key online influencers and online communities in Malaysia to maximize positive publicity opportunities for MSF, in coordination with OCA mission

  • Produce institutional communications materials in a timely and accurate manner and dispense it to targeted audiences in Malaysia 

  • Coordinate the (re)production of multimedia materials for public communications in the country

  • Contribute in developing the digital and general institutional communications strategy for Malaysia to be in coherence with the overall communication vision and strategy of MSF Hong Kong, taking into account different communications needs, culture, and language, and in coordination with the OCA mission to avoid duplication or risks to operations. 

  • Where possible, work with the OCA mission/OCA Communications Advisor (CA) to incorporate operational communications objectives into the institutional communications strategy.

  • Provide operational communications support for MSF in-country mission, upon request from the mission, and in coordination with Communications Manager and OCA CA.

The ideal candidate
  • Minimum 3 years’ journalistic or public relations experience

  • Experience in managing social media accounts is a must

  • Basic knowledge/experience on the use of graphic design softwares

  • Strong interest and knowledge of world affairs

  • Good knowledge of local media in Malaysia

  • Experience working with NGO/INGO is desirable    

  • Commitment to the aims and values of Médecins Sans Frontières

  • Ability to work independently and remotely but also a good team player

  • Fluency in both spoken and written English and Bahasa Malaysia is a must

  • Good presentation and solid experience in translation and copy writing

  • Ability to work under pressure and to respect deadlines

  • Flexible and willing to travel
