When a deadly disease is spreading, communicating about the danger and how to protect one’s self and one’s family is critical.

Field teams use megaphones to give crucial information during outbreaks of epidemic diseases like meningitis or measles – deadly illnesses that are highly contagious and can spread quickly without proper vaccination coverage. Just like a town crier, MSF field staff walk or drive around villages and towns to broadcast important health messages. The megaphone helps carry voices up to 80 metres letting people know about a disease outbreak, what they can do to protect themselves, and where the nearest MSF clinic is to go for medical attention or vaccinations. Megaphones are also used on-site during a vaccination campaign or census, when MSF is organizing large numbers of people at a time.
