Midwife
Early detection of life-threatening complications during pregnancy - especially in settings where access to healthcare for pregnant women is difficult or non-existent - is critical to the survival of both the mother and child. Midwives play an essential role in MSF's work in obstetric care.
Midwives work within MSF field teams in the provision of basic health care; specifically in the implementation and coordination of maternal and child health programs. Programs may be within existing health centres located in hospitals or clinics, or as part of a public health initiative.
Midwives often work in collaboration with local health authorities and are responsible for the supervision and training of local midwives and traditional birth attendants in antepartum, labour and delivery, and postpartum care.
A mission for a midwife includes costs for transportation, training, travel documents and vaccines, and lodging.
