Flying today
Feb 28, 2008
Hello! Finally, I'm flying to Africa this afternoon and will arrive Aweil by tomorrow afternoon.
Due to some changes of arrangement in operations, I have stayed in Paris for eight days. But this gives me a chance to have revision of all my war surgery knowledge. Like a retreat, it also gives me an opportunity to review my work and life and to plan my future.
Although I have a few field experiences, most of these skills are not practised in Hong Kong's modern society. I still have to refresh my knowledge before all missions. It was so busy in HK. I had to work until the day of my departure. So it's good for me to have time to review.
Being a general surgeon in a developed society like Hong Kong, we always face the dilemma of going high-technology or high-touch patient service; of highly specialised or generalised skills; using resources on pursuing the excellence or benefit for the most; being a doctor as a profession or a job; commitment to our patient care or paid by the service. This is the reason why I need to have a break every now and then to regain my sense of mission and momentum in my regular patient care.
I hope I can learn more in the coming mission.
Au Yiu Kai
