Poor babies

In less than three weeks here, I treated 3 babies surgically, not counting those I delivered through Caesarian section on their mothers. All of them less than a month old.

First a baby which is delivered in our hospital with a meningocele in her lower back, this is a congenital condition with the spinal cord and its covering malformed. The skin covering in the baby is real thin and looks like it will rupture at any time and if that happen, infection will go into her spinal cord and cause meningitis. I think she is lucky to be born in our hospital so that I can close the defect for her as soon as possible and now she's doing fine. The second baby is born with a large lump on his forehead just above his nose, it's not so life threatening, but I always afraid that children born with obvious deformities may be easily abandoned by their parents so if possible I will try to treat them soon. He is recovering in our wards after excision of the lump. The third baby is a referral from Lankien, another project of MSF nearby, she is born with a gangrenous right forearm which we really don't know the exact reason for it. We arranged plane for them to reach our hospital and after assessment, most of her forearm is dead and is prone to infection if not remove soon, so I need to amputate her forearm when she is just 6 days old, poor baby! I hate amputation!
