At the core of our work is a commitment to independence and impartiality. Without taking any government funding, MSF-HK relies on private donors like you, so we can act fast with the unrestricted funds whenever an emergency strikes.
Thousands of people in Türkiye (formerly Turkey) and Syria are reeling from deadly earthquakes that struck the morning of February 6. The first registered at magnitude 7.8—one of the strongest earthquakes to hit the region in 100 years—and the second at magnitude 7.5. As of the latest report on February 13, at least 36,000 people have been killed and tens of thousands injured. And those numbers are, sadly, going up as local authorities continue their search for survivors.
“Health facilities are impacted and overwhelmed, and the medical personnel in northern Syria is working around the clock to respond to the huge numbers of wounded arriving to the facilities. From the first hours, our teams treated around 200 wounded and we received 160 casualties in the facilities and the clinics that we run or support in northern Idlib.,” said Sebastien Gay, MSF head of mission in Syria. “Our ambulances are also deployed to assist the population.”
In northwest Syria, our teams have been able to work since the early hours to respond to this influx because we already had a presence in the region for many years. Apart from treating wounded survivors, we have also donated emergency kits, and we are in touch with health authorities to provide support. As many homes have been destroyed, MSF is also supporting displaced people in the region with donations of blankets and essential life kits.
Your support helps us to response to any crisis. Your unrestricted support allows the donation to go towards MSF's global projects and provide flexible funding. This will allow us to allocate resources where needs are the greatest in more than 70 countries around the world.
