MSF Day 2007 – Be a Field Volunteer in the City

This year, with the slogan of "Let's Donate a Day's Income and Volunteer for MSF", we invite the public to join "MSF Day 2007" and donate a day's income to support Medecins Sans Frontieres's worldwide medical relief work. With the kind support from the public and the private companies, MSF Hong Kong has raised more than HK$ 4 million. In order to thank for the participants, we hold the "MSF Day 2007 – Be a Field Volunteer in the City" activity today. Government official as well as celebrities from medical and entertainment sectors join together to welcome the arrival of "7.30 MSF Day".

When officiating at the ceremony, Ms. Sandra Suk-yee Lee, Permanent Secretary for Food & Health (Health), salutes to MSF volunteers that they provide medical humanitarian aid to those in need, irrespective of nationality, race and religion. "Hong Kong has a very good tradition that government, NGOs and volunteers always can work together to provide different social service. The public in Hong Kong is also enthusiastic in contributing to international public service," she adds.

Mr. Andy Chi-on Hui, Caring Ambassador of MSF Day 2007, reveals that one of his doctors has joined MSF mission. He acclaims the volunteering spirit of field volunteers, who leave their families, friends and work and provide medical assistance to those affected by armed conflicts, epidemics, natural or man-made disasters. By joining MSF Day, he would like to show his support to those working on the frontline and "remind them they are not alone".

Ms. Louisa Yuk-wa So, Life Saving Ambassador of MSF Day 2007, and Dr. Kin Choi, President of the Hong Kong Medical Association, also share though we may not be able to work on the frontline, we can still support MSF field volunteers and their work by joining MSF Day.

Since the launch of  "MSF Day 2007" in May, 229 companies and organisations from private and public sectors, together with 16 government departments and individual donors, have shown their great support. More than 10,000 participants will wear the "MSF Day Badge" tomorrow together and experience the volunteering spirit of MSF tomorrow.

Besides, celebrities including Mr. Donald Tsang, the Chief Executive of Hong Kong and the "MSF Day 2007 Honourable Campaign Leader", Mr. Joe Jing-keung Kwok, the Director of Fire Services, Prof. Lawrence Lau, the President of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Mr. Justin Lo, Artiste, and the officiating guests of today's ceremony, also have shown support to MSF Day participants and our field volunteers by writing their words of encouragement.
