Too many Syrian mothers need our help

The conflict in Syria is extremely intense, an estimated 6.8 million people in urgent need of humanitarian assistance while some 1.4 million Syrians have fled to neighboring countries that are overwhelmed and where the humanitarian response has so far been unable to meet their needs. MSF is providing assistance to the Syrians inside Syria as well as the neighboring countries, including the Syrian mothers, they also need carers:

Cathy JANSSENS, a Belgian midwife, shared her working experience in Syria:

“For many of these women I was more than just a midwife, I was someone who would listen.”

Prior to the conflict, 95% of Syrian women gave birth with a skilled birth attendant. With the gradual collapse of the health system, this is no longer an option for most of them. On 1 February of this year, a woman gave birth to twins by Caesarean section at an MSF clinic in northern Syria. The father of the twins said they searched for two weeks to find a hospital capable of performing the surgery.

Dr. Natalie Robets shared a story: I heard about a pregnant woman who had gone to hospital to give birth. She needed a blood transfusion which was given but the blood used was not the right type. She died, and is not clear whether it was the haemorrhage, or the transfusion itself, that killed her.

A Syrian mother of 8 children fled Rural Damascus to a camp in Lebanon. “When I was in Syria I had a home and I dreamt that my sons would get married and live close to me. Then we came to Lebanon. There is no future for us. Now none of my children have a future. This war has destroyed everything. Everything.” She said.
